Broad-leaved Marsh Orchid belongs to a group of closely related species, including Early Marsh Orchid (D. incarnata) and Lapland Marsh Orchid (D. lapponica). These are usually separated by their range, but hybridize freely where ranges overlap, making identification difficult. Broad-leaved Marsh Orchid has a leafy stem, with broad, bluish-green leaves, sometimes covered with dark brown spots. The flowers have upward-spreading sepals, and long bracts between the flowers. The lower lip of each has toothed side-lobes with dark markings, and a short, unmarked central lobe. D. incarnata has pale leaves without spots, while D. lapponica has spotted leaves.
